Bad Ischl in Winter

Bad Ischl is a place that only came to mind by chance in a magazine. It turns out to be a beautiful little town, as you can see from the pictures. While the old town isn’t particularly large, Bad Ischl still has a lot to offer. From sporting activities to sightseeing, there’s something for everyone. The town became famous as the summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Sisi. In winter, there’s virtually no tourism, which gives you the opportunity to explore the town in peace and quiet.

I only spent a weekend there, which was sufficient for a first visit. I recommend making reservations at restaurants in advance for the evenings, as it’s otherwise difficult, if not impossible, to find a free table. In summer, Bad Ischl is ideal for hiking, and in winter for skiing and snowboarding.

My main reason was a guided tour of the summer residence of the famous emperor, where his descendant still lives today. He even came up to us during the tour and talked to us, which almost brought tears to my eyes.

Even though the entrance fee is quite expensive at €23 per person, it’s worth a visit and, above all, very entertaining. The surrounding park is also perfect for long walks.

Even the most ardent shoppers among you are catered for, as Bad Ischl boasts many excellent shops such as Thalia, Tom Tailor, and others. A must-visit is the imperial and royal confectionery Zauner with its fantastic chocolates. On the other side of town, you’ll find a complementary Café and Restaurant Zauner, serving delicious Kaiserschmarrn. I recommend making a reservation here as well, unless you’re prepared for a long wait.

I am glad I visited Bad Ischl and will definitely come back.
